"Connecting
Civil Society of Asia & Europe: An Informal Consultation"

Recognising
the importance of bridging civil societies in Asia and Europe,
the Asia-Europe
Foundation, Casa
Asia (Barcelona, Spain), the International
Institute for Asian Studies, and the
Japan
Center for International Exchange
(Tokyo, Japan) with the support of the Japanese Government,
co-organised a conference on Connecting Civil Society
of Asia and Europe from 16 to 18 June 2004, in Barcelona.
The
two-day meeting brought representatives from various Civil
Society groups in Asia and Europe together to discuss issues
of mutual concern, such as governance and human rights, urbanisation
and the environment, academic co-operation, interfaith dialogue,
social issues, international relations, and much more. It
provided a platform for constructive dialogue on the future
direction of civil society co-operation between the regions
of Asia and Europe, a few months before the Fifth ASEM Summit,
to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam in November 2004.

Search of a Humanised Globalisation: The Contribution of Spirituality
based Social Movements."

Over
three working days, the discussion will explore the contribution
of spirituality based social movements within the framework
of globalisation. This conference will investigate the extent
to which spirituality based social movements conflict with
globalisation, and the possible alternatives that these movements
have to offer.

Cultural Divide? Appreciating one another better

This event followed on from a Windsor Forum that
was organised jointly by ASEF and the New World Order Forum
in October 2002, on "how can multi-lateral institutions respond
more effectively to crises of global security?"
Major themes that were explored in this unique forum were
regional integration, global politics, conflict resolution
and developing the ASEM process.
