Talks on the Hill
"Cross-Examining
Justice:
Cultural,
Religious and Social Conceptions of Justice in Asia &
Europe."
While
there may be shared intuitive notions of common moral norms
of justice, concrete and practical understandings and application
of justice vary across cultures, religions and societies.
As the world grapples with the coming together and the increasing
proximity and mobility of various populations, a discussion
on the values of justice is crucial as justice is increasingly
invoked in solving international stalemates between states
and the legal status' of individuals. The content for discussion
in this "Talks on the Hill" meeting will range from the major
ideas in the philosophy of jurisprudence to the practical
application of the various models in modern judicial systems.
In doing so, this meeting will seek to bridge major cleavages
of understanding in this topic, consider and understand political,
economic and social realities that factor into the application
of justice among others.
Included
in this meeting will be a case study on capital punishment.
In advance of the meeting, the Asia Europe
Foundation hired a student to prepare a briefing paper on
the major themes of the meeting. This report is distributed
to all participants prior to their arrival, and serves as
an important introduction. Please download it below:
